A Look Behind the Scenes: Baymeadows Movers Joins Forces with Chipman and OMA to Haul Away Legacy Equipment from AMC Theatres
Most moviegoers walk into a movie theater with their mind on the movie they're about to see. They notice the giant screen, comfortable seats, and maybe the smell of freshly popped popcorn. What they don't see is everything happening behind the scenes to make that experience possible—or what it takes when it's time to replace decades of equipment and open the door for the future.
Not long ago, Baymeadows Movers was able to partner with Chipman Relocation & Logistics on a one-of-a-kind commercial moving project via our membership in the Office Moving Alliance (OMA). As a team, we helped with the removal of older projection equipment from several AMC Theatre locations. It was not your typical commercial move. It demanded careful planning, specialized equipment, experienced crews, and seamless coordination between reliable relocation partners.
Jobs like these are among the reasons we love what we do. No two commercial moves are exactly the same, and that's what makes our work rewarding.
Every Commercial Move Has a Story
One of the finest parts of commercial moving is the variety.
During one week we're moving an entire school before students come back for the new year. The next we're moving physical therapy equipment to a new healthcare facility. Then we are inside a movie theater, meticulously disassembling and removing equipment that has entertained millions of people over the years.
This AMC project was particularly memorable because it involved removing large digital cinema projection systems, as well as several pieces of historic 35mm projection equipment. Walking into the projection booths felt like stepping back in time. Some of the film projectors and reels had been part of the movie-going experience long before digital projection was established as the industry norm.
For film lovers, it was fascinating.
For our crew, it was a reflection that every piece of equipment we move carries its own story.
Great Projects Start with Thoughtful Planning
Projects like this don't start when the moving truck pulls up.
Long before the first projector is taken down, our team plans out logistics, scheduling, access points, equipment requirements, manpower, and safety planning.
Working alongside Chipman Relocation & Logistics, we oversaw every phase of the project to make sure each theater could be completed efficiently and safely. One of the biggest advantages of being part of the Office Moving Alliance (OMA) is having access to a nationwide network of experienced commercial movers who uphold the same commitment to professionalism and customer service. By pairing Chipman's national relocation expertise with Baymeadows Movers' local knowledge and project management experience, we were able to carry out the work seamlessly from start to finish.
Movie theaters weren't designed with equipment removal in mind.
Projection booths tend to be tucked away on upper levels with narrow hallways, constricted doorways, and restricted access. Some sites have elevators, while others do not. Transporting large projection systems through those spaces requires much more than simply rolling them onto a dolly and making for the truck.
Every challenge has to be anticipated before any work begins.
That's where experience truly matters.
It's Truly About Much More Than Brute Strength
It's often assumed that moving heavy equipment is just about raw strength.
The truth is that commercial moving hinges on preparation, technique, and having the right tools for the job.
Projects like the AMC equipment removal require specialized dollies, rigging equipment, lift systems, protective materials, and experienced crews who know how to safely navigate oversized equipment through confined spaces.
Each projector had to be thoughtfully disconnected, protected, maneuvered through the building, and securely loaded for transport.
A lot of these systems are not only heavy—they're also extremely delicate. One accidental bump into a doorway or uneven transition could result in significant damage.
Patience and communication are as important as physical strength.
Safeguarding the Building Is Equally Important
While our focus is on carefully moving equipment, we're equally committed to safeguarding the customer's facility.
Commercial structures represent a substantial investment, and even minor repairs can prove disruptive and expensive.
When a move is complete, our goal is for customers to remember how smoothly everything went, not the moving process itself.
Teamwork Makes the Difference
Sizable commercial moving projects are never a single-person task.
Each member of the crew has a clear role, and communication is essential from beginning to end.
One team member may be steering equipment through a doorway while another manages the load. Someone else is watching clearances, while another team member is preparing the next piece for transport.
When veteran crews work together, there is a rhythm that develops. That's something that isn't learned overnight.
Watching our team work together was a great example of what happens when seasoned movers share the same commitment to safety, communication, and customer service.
A Little Levity Along the Way
Even during challenging commercial projects, it's worthwhile to appreciate the experience.
Working inside movie theaters certainly had its perks.
Our crew couldn't resist slipping downstairs for a few movie snacks in between tasks on the project. After spending the day behind the scenes where few people ever get to go, popcorn for some reason tasted even better.
Such moments help make long workdays memorable and remind us that while we take our work seriously, we also enjoy what we do.
Commercial Moving Goes Beyond Transportation
Plenty of people believe moving companies simply load trucks and unload them somewhere else.
Commercial moving is far more than that.
Projects often involve logistics planning, inventory management, warehousing, project management, scheduling, handling of specialized equipment, and coordinating multiple contractors.
Every customer has different needs.
Some businesses must relocate hundreds of employees over a single weekend.
Others need sensitive medical equipment moved without disruption.
Certain projects happen overnight to minimize downtime.
Others—like the AMC project—require carefully removing specialized equipment from unique environments.
Each relocation calls for adaptability, foresight, and problem solving.
At Baymeadows Movers, when someone asks, "Can you help with this?" our first thought is almost always, "Let's figure out how."
Experience Builds Confidence
For decades, Baymeadows Movers has proudly supported Jacksonville and Northeast Florida, and we've learned that smooth projects consistently come down to the same fundamentals:
Preparation.
Communication.
Professionalism.
Trust.
Our customers know we'll arrive prepared, communicate throughout the project, treat their property with respect, and solve problems rather than create them.
Whether we're operating inside schools, hospitals, office buildings, warehouses, government facilities, entertainment venues, or commercial campuses, our approach remains the same.
Protect the customer.
Protect the equipment.
Finish the work safely.
Leave the site better than we found it.
Preserving a Part of Movie History
One of the unexpected highlights of this project was seeing some of the original 35mm projection systems that once gave life to countless films.
Long before streaming services and digital cinema, these machines created memorable experiences for generations of moviegoers.
Working alongside them gave our crew a true appreciation for how much technology has progressed over the years.
It's not every day that a moving company has the chance to help retire a small piece of entertainment history.
Speaking for us, it was a moment we will never forget.
